The Heritage of Scotland County

Scotland, formed from Richmond in 1899, is a relatively new county, but it has a long history as part of Anson (formed in 1750) and then Richmond (formed in 1779).  This old territory was settled in the mid-eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries by emigrants from northeastern North Carolina, neighboring counties, and by Scots directly from the Highlands.  Many of these pioneers migrated to South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi spreading the kinfolks of Scotland County all over the South.  White, Black and Lumbee Indian people have given the area a rich heritage.  Present day Scotland County is bordered by Richmond, Hoke, Moore and Robeson Counties.  Laurinburg is the county seat.
